What is the story behind António? When did it start and what was the inspiration behind it?

We are two sisters belonging to a 2nd generation of a leather goods manufacturer’s Portuguese family. Our brand was born in September 2017 but the story behind it has almost 40 years. We created the brand to honour our father's work, that's why we proudly call ourselves António - a handmade story.

What is the story behind António? When did it start and what was the inspiration behind it?

We are two sisters belonging to a 2nd generation of a leather goods manufacturer’s Portuguese family. Our brand was born in September 2017 but the story behind it has almost 40 years. We created the brand to honour our father's work, that's why we proudly call ourselves António - a handmade story.

What are the values that drive the brand?

From our experience a desire was born to create a bag brand with a clean, timeless and sustainable design. Bags that resist time and last more than a lifetime.We’ve chosen to work with a vegetable tanned leather and nickel free accessories, which assure a product in harmony with our environment as well as a new consumption conscience.

Which image do you personally feel really represents what António is all about?

Our brand is all about our family story. This image [on the right] is representative of this feeling of our love.

What are the distinctive features of the brand’s products?

With an innovative design and minimalistic lines, enriched with distinct details, each model gets its own personality adapted to a sophisticated look.The models in Natural colour get a particular place, as the leather will develop a character, along time, getting tonalities and nuances growing from a nude state to a honey tone.The SPECIAL EDITIONS grows in this universe, from the leather metamorphosis and from time itself. We usually see this line as a reflection of our emotions, where we explore new ways of seeing the same object.

Which image do you personally feel really represents what António is all about?

Our brand is all about our family story. This image is representative of this feeling of our love.

How does the creative process for the products carry out?

The design of our bags was inspired by the bags our father has made in the past. But we are always paying attention, because inspiration comes from the little things in everyday life.

Personally, what is your day like working at António?

Our every day is in the middle of the production, where we grew up and we confess we love.The sound of the hammers, the typical songs of the artisans and all the typical industry environment gives us the feeling that we are exactly where we want to be. We are proud to say that we are a family, we truly value the work of our artisans and we are very proud of our team of super women with magic hands.

Personally, what is your day like working at António?

Is there a specific product or piece that has proved iconic for the brand?

The João tote has always been an iconic bag.A no gender bag with an urban feeling, square and super minimalistic. The way it switches from a tote to a backpack has been a success.

I know one shouldn’t pick favorites but… what is your personal favorite piece from your current collection?

We are very happy with result of our new special edition, called DIVE. The pieces are partially dipped in paint, playing with the geometry of the lines and creating unique colourful blocks. 

How has The Feeting Room played into the brand's growth?

TFR were our first partners, with whom we counted from the very beginning. with who we chose to launch our brand and our main partners ever. Our relationship goes beyond work, today we really feel part of the team who we proudly call friends.
